Menopause Raises Risk
Of Developing Depression
(April
06, 2007) -- Boston - A new study has shown that women face a
high risk of
developing depression while they go through the
hormonal
changes that occur during menopause.
Doctors have stated that during menopause the risk for women to develop
depression nearly doubles. There are things which can help women though such
as going on long walks or going through hormone-replacement therapies.
The stress which occurs in middle-aged women during this time puts them
at a high risk and can be caused by a
traumatic experience such as the death
of a family member, divorce, etc. When you combine menopause with one of
these difficult situations you have the ingredients to lead people into
clinical depression if they are not treated right.
Dr. Lee Cohen stated that depression during menopause, “needs to be taken
seriously.”
Clinical depression affects about 13 million people each year.
Women have double the risk of developing it when compared to men.
It is important for women to watch their mental health during menopause
and get the treatment necessary, whether it be from hormone replacement
therapy or by other methods such as long walks and relaxation methods, to
fight depression.
