When
the whole world is writing about someone like Michael Phelps, you
tend to get a lot of overlap. If you've been following the Olympics
by now, you probably know the basics: Phelps grew up just outside of
Baltimore, and battled ADHD as a kid.
Sharing
your life with others, especially people you don't yet know, can be difficult.
Writing a journal also takes some time, energy and real commitment. Imagine
pouring your thoughts and feelings out a few times a week. 
Short
sections explaining the biological reasons for the disorder's more exasperating
symptoms are contributed by Ratey's husband John, a psychiatrist specializing in
treatment of ADHD and co-author of Driven to Distraction, a seminal ADHD book.
With a nod to her audience, Ratey divides her book into sections that can be
absorbed in small increments, including her own struggles with the disorder, her
six-step "A.N.S.W.E.R" system, case studies and tips from spouses and employers.
